Weed Control Services in Powell, Dublin, & Delaware OH

Keeping your lawn lush and green in Central Ohio, and surrounding areas in Delaware County, requires more than just regular mowing and watering. Unwanted weeds steal nutrients, choke out healthy grass, and ruin your lawn's appearance. At GroundSmith, we specialize in proven, year-round weed control solutions to keep your lawn pristine, thick, and thriving.

Why Is Weed Control So Important?

Weeds don't just make your lawn look messy; they compete with your grass for sunlight, water, and nutrients. Without proper control, weeds like crabgrass, clover, and dandelions can quickly overtake your yard. A successful weed control program doesn't just eliminate weeds-it strengthens your grass too, making it more resistant to future weed infestations.

Weeds Common in Central Ohio Lawns:

Broadleaf Weeds - Dandelions, white clover, chickweed.
Grassy Weeds - Crabgrass, goosegrass, annual bluegrass.
Sedges - Yellow nutsedge, purple nutsedge.

Each type of weed requires a targeted treatment approach to be effectively eliminated.

Choose GroundSmith for reliable, affordable, and expert lawn care services that prioritize both your lawn's health and your financial peace of mind.  Schedule your lawn assessment today!

*Please understand that depending on how your lawn looks and it's current condition it could take multiple treatments to get your weeds under control. A perfect lawn is not achieved overnight, it can takes weeks, sometimes months to get the desired results.  Regardless of the state of your lawn, we'll be able to put a comprehensive plan together to tackle your weed problem.

Our Proven Weed Control Programs

Enhanced TurfSmith Program

By far our most popular, our enhanced program provides you with all the nutrients and feeding of the standard program, with several extras that help take your lawn further.

The key differences include additional weed prevention and control (including our weed control guarantee), along with a grub preventer with surface feeding insect control applied in the summer.

This early application allows us to get a head start on preventative weed control. A split application approach will extend the crabgrass control longer into summer.

This application is focused on knocking out your spring broadleaf weeds including dandelions and clover, along with many other broadleaf weeds that attack your lawn in summer. The timing of this round allows us to tackle a larger variety of weeds, rather than just the early bloomers like dandelions.

This application extends the crabgrass control effort much further into summer when crabgrass can get difficult under certain weather conditions. Its feeding also helps your lawn prepare for the summer heat.

This multi-benefit application does several things for your lawn. If helps prevent turf damaging grubs and other root feeding larvae, it fights off surface feeding insects that attack your lawn (it helps with fleas and ticks too), along with providing a summer feeding that helps your lawn endure the summer months.

A balanced fertilizer and spot weed control application is key to helping your lawn bounce back from summer stress. Lawns do their most development and improvement in fall.  This round helps get that going.

Although the spring weed control gets all the attention, the fall application is actually the star of the show.  Summer brings weed seeds that begin to sprout as the weather cools.  Knocking them out now is the real secret to a clean lawn in the spring.

The most important application of the year. Lawn roots grow and develop late into the fall. Feeding now both helps with that continued root growth and ensures your lawn has the nutrients in needs to weather the winter and start strong in the spring.

Standard TurfSmith Program

Also known as our “Clean and Green” program, our standard program gives your lawn the essential “feeding” and weed control it needs.

We use the same high quality products we use in Enhanced, just with a different frequency and focus. If you want a healthy, strong lawn but don’t need the extras like grub control or additional pre-emergent treatments then this program can be for you.

This first application gives your lawn a shot of nutrients as the season starts, along with a crabgrass preventer to help control crabgrass and other summer weeds. It also includes a “post emergent” crabgrass control to help catch any seedlings that might have got a head start on summer.

This application of balanced fertilizer helps your lawn prepare for the stresses of summer.

The GroundSmith Approach To Weed Control

At GroundSmith, we take a proactive and targeted approach to weed control, combining pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides along with a comprehensive fertilizing program to eliminate weeds at every stage of their growth cycle.

Our program is designed to not only remove weeds but also promote a healthier, thicker lawn that naturally resists future weed invasions.

Step 1: Pre-Emergent Weed Control (Prevents Weeds from Growing)

Pre-emergent herbicides act as a barrier, stopping weed seeds from germinating before they even take root. These treatments are essential for preventing aggressive weeds like crabgrass or dandelions which can quickly overtake your lawn if left unchecked.

  • Applied twice in the spring and once in the fall
  • Creates a protective layer in the soil that prevents weed seed development
  • Works best when combined with proper fertilization and thick, healthy turf

Step 2: Post-Emergent Weed Control (Kills Existing Weeds)

Post-emergent herbicides target weeds that have already sprouted and started competing with your grass for nutrients and water. These treatments are applied strategically throughout the growing season for maximum effectiveness.

    • Targets broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover, plantain) and grassy weeds (crabgrass, goosegrass)
    • Requires multiple applications for full eradication
    • Works best when combined with a comprehensive lawn care program

Questions About Our Weed Control Service?

At GroundSmith, we understand that maintaining a vibrant, healthy lawn can raise many questions. To assist you, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions addressing common concerns and providing expert insights into effective weed control practices. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge needed to achieve and maintain a beautiful lawn year-round.

Weed control is a process, and results depend on the type of weeds, your lawn's condition, and the time of year. Most homeowners see improvement within 7 to 14 days after a treatment, but complete weed eradication can take multiple applications.

No, effective weed control requires a season-long approach. Some weeds require multiple applications, and pre-emergent treatments are necessary to prevent new weeds from growing. Our 7-step program ensures your lawn stays weed-free throughout the year.

Yes! Our pre-emergent weed control treatments stop weed seeds from sprouting. This is crucial for crabgrass, dandelions, and other aggressive weeds. Combined with post-emergent treatments, this prevents weeds at all stages of their life cycle.

Yes, but we recommend keeping children and pets off the lawn for at least 24 hours after application. Once the treatment has dried, it is completely safe.

No, our selective herbicides target weeds while leaving your grass healthy and unharmed. In fact, proper weed control helps your lawn thrive by reducing competition for nutrients and water.

Some weeds, especially deep-rooted broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover, may take multiple applications to fully eradicate. Also, new weeds may emerge from seeds already present in the soil. This is why a consistent treatment program is necessary.

The most common lawn weeds in Central Ohio include:

  • Crabgrass
  • Dandelions
  • Clover
  • Goosegrass
  • Yellow nutsedge
  • Chickweed

It's best to avoid mowing 24-48 hours before and after a weed control application. This allows the treatment to fully absorb into the weeds and ensures the best results.

A thick, healthy lawn is your best defense against weeds. Proper fertilization, aeration, and regular mowing help create a dense turf that crowds out weeds. Our 7-step weed control and fertilization program is designed to do just that!
